Background

Before the BxCRRB began the Community Engaged Research Academy, we realized that we needed to take the posture of listening to the community’s concerns about research and health in our borough.

We held two community dialogues at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln (formerly Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center) and Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center.

Community dialogues or a community cafés “are an easy-to-use method for having thoughtful and productive discussions around issues that deeply impact our lives, communities and families. They are built on the belief that people already have within them the wisdom to address even the most difficult challenges.”

At the community dialogues, we invited the Tremont Neighborhood Health Action Center (under the NYC Department of Health) to provide statistics about the climate of health in the Bronx.

Bronxites gathered and shared their experiences with navigating health care access and with participating in research. Together we re-imagined what health research could look like in our borough.
